From Bank Manager to Baby Photographer: Following a Dream I Never Knew I Had

If someone had told me years ago, whilst I was working as a bank manager, that one day I would spend my days cuddling babies, choosing tiny outfits and creating memories for families, I would never have believed them.

Back then, my days were filled with targets, meetings and spreadsheets. Although I enjoyed helping people, deep down I knew something was missing. I wanted a career that made my heart happy, something creative, something meaningful.

Like many photographers, my journey started very simply.

There was no fancy studio.

No expensive equipment.

No walls lined with beautiful props.

Just me, a camera, and a white sheet pinned up as a backdrop.

I became the family photographer, capturing birthdays, celebrations and everyday moments.

What began as a hobby slowly became a passion.

I invested in a better camera.

Then some lights.

A few tiny outfits.

One backdrop became two.

Then five.

And before I knew it, photography had taken over not only my spare time but my heart as well.

Every new piece of equipment felt like a milestone. Every session taught me something new. Every family that trusted me with their memories gave me the confidence to keep going. Hours of watching videos for camera angles lighting then I needed MORE.

A mentor to teach me the intricate side of the camera and how to light a family.

Eventually, I made the leap.

In 2014 I left the world of banking behind and followed the dream that had quietly been growing for years. Outgrowing my dining room with props.

Today, I have my own studio, and I often smile when I look around because it feels like Aladdin’s Cave.

Shelves overflowing with beautiful newborn props.

Rows of stunning maternity gowns.

Tiny bonnets, wraps and headbands in every colour imaginable.

Wooden bowls, delicate flokatis, and little treasures collected over the years.

It’s a world away from that white sheet backdrop where it all began

But despite everything that has changed, one thing has remained the same.

The feeling I get when I place a photograph into a parent’s hands and watch them smile.

The tears from grandparents.

The pride of mums and dads.

The knowledge that these tiny moments, which pass so quickly, have been preserved forever.

Photography has given me so much more than a career.

It has given me purpose.

It has introduced me to wonderful families.

It has allowed me to turn creativity into my everyday life.

And perhaps the biggest lesson I’ve learned is this:

Sometimes the dreams you never planned for become the ones that change your life the most.

From a white sheet backdrop to a studio full of treasures, it has been an incredible journey.

And honestly?

I wouldn’t change a single moment.
